How to Use Grammarly AI: Proofreading, Paraphrasing, and Generative Help
Guide to Grammarly's AI tools: fix grammar and tone, paraphrase and humanize text, use AI Chat and prompts on desktop and mobile, and get expert-style feedback.
What Grammarly's AI Can Do
Grammarly checks spelling, grammar, punctuation, and tone. Its AI features add paraphrasing, style changes, and generative help: you can ask for drafts, outlines, or rewrites. Tools include a proofreader, paraphraser, humanizer (to make text sound more natural), and Reader Reactions (how an audience might respond). Some plans offer an Expert Review that simulates feedback from a specific role (e.g., editor or professor). AI is available in the browser extension, Grammarly Editor, desktop app, and on mobile. You need a Grammarly account; some features require a paid plan.
Using the Proofreader and Tone
As you type in a supported app or on Grammarly's site, suggestions appear inline. Click a suggestion to accept it or ignore it. Open the Grammarly panel for a full list of issues and a tone indicator (e.g., formal, friendly, confident). Adjust the tone goal so suggestions match your intent. For existing text, select the passage and use "Improve it" or the pencil icon; Grammarly will suggest or apply fixes. Always review suggestions; they are not always correct for technical or creative writing.
Paraphrasing and Humanizer
Select a sentence or paragraph and choose "Paraphrase" or "Humanize." Paraphrase offers alternative phrasings (e.g., more concise or more formal). Humanizer is intended to make AI-generated or stiff text sound more natural. Use these when you want to keep the meaning but change the wording. Do not use them to disguise plagiarism; use them to refine your own or properly attributed content.
Generative AI and Prompts
In the Grammarly Editor or where the AI panel is available, you can prompt the AI: ask for an outline, a first draft, or a rewrite. Example: "Write a short professional email declining the invite and suggesting a 15-minute call." The AI generates text you can insert and edit. You can also select existing text and ask for changes (e.g., "Make this more concise" or "Add a closing sentence"). Responses depend on context; include who the audience is and what format you need.
On Mobile (iOS and Android)
In supported apps or in the Grammarly keyboard, long-press or highlight the text you want to improve. Tap "Improve it" and choose a suggestion or a custom prompt (e.g., "Make it formal"). Tap "Insert" to apply the change. Generative AI on mobile may have slightly different entry points depending on the app; check the Grammarly menu or the lightbulb icon after selecting text.
Browser Extension and Where It Works
Install the Grammarly extension for Chrome, Safari, Firefox, or Edge. It can run on most websites where you type (email, forms, docs). Click the Grammarly icon to see the score and suggestions. In some sites, only basic checks are available; for full AI features, use the Grammarly Editor or desktop app. The extension helps catch errors and tone issues without leaving the page.
Getting the Most From Suggestions
Set your audience and goal (e.g., academic, business, casual) in Grammarly settings so tone suggestions match. For generative AI, give clear instructions: length, tone, and key points. Review every suggestion and generated block; do not accept blindly. For sensitive or high-stakes text, treat Grammarly as a first pass and do a final read yourself or with a human editor.
What to Do Next
Type or paste a short email or paragraph and run it through the proofreader and paraphraser. Try one generative prompt (e.g., "Draft three bullet points summarizing X") in the Editor. On mobile, use "Improve it" on a message or note. See which features you use most and consider the paid plan if you need Expert Review or more generative usage.
