Tax Day 2026: IRS deadline and extension filing

The federal tax filing deadline for most individuals in 2026 is April 15, 2026. Returns for the 2025 tax year must be filed or an extension requested by that date. The IRS does not extend the deadline when April 15 falls on a weekend or holiday for 2026; the date stands.

Taxpayers who need more time can request an automatic six-month extension. That extends the filing deadline to October 15, 2026. The extension is for filing only: any tax owed is still due by April 15. Paying late can trigger interest and failure-to-pay penalties even if a valid extension was filed.

How to Request a 2026 Extension

To get an extension, file Form 4868 (Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return) by April 15, 2026. The form can be submitted electronically through IRS Free File, commercial software, or a tax professional. The IRS also allows taxpayers to request an extension by making an electronic payment and selecting "extension" as the reason; no separate form is required in that case. Extension requests are automatically approved; the IRS does not require a reason.

What Happens If You Owe Tax

If you expect to owe tax, the IRS expects you to estimate the amount and pay it by April 15. If you pay at least 90% of the tax you owe by the deadline, you can often avoid the failure-to-pay penalty, though interest still accrues on unpaid amounts. Refunds are not paid until a return is filed, so filing the return as soon as you can (even after extension) is the only way to get a refund.

State Deadlines

Many states mirror the federal April 15 deadline; others set different dates. Taxpayers in Maine and Massachusetts get until April 17, 2026, because of state holidays. Check your state revenue department for the exact due date and extension rules.

What to Watch in 2026

The IRS continues to encourage e-file and direct deposit for faster processing. The agency has cited improved phone service and in-person help in recent years. Taxpayers should use IRS.gov for forms, the "Where's My Refund?" tool, and payment options. Scam calls and emails pretending to be the IRS remain common; the IRS does not initiate contact by phone or email to demand immediate payment.
